FIRST LADY OF OHIO HOSTS WINTER 2017 “SPOTLIGHT” RECEPTION
Exhibit at Governor’s Residence Celebrates Ohio Artists with Disabilities
Ohio First Lady Karen W. Kasich, along with artists and other special guests from across the state, recently celebrated the winter installment of Spotlight: Featured Artists at the Ohio Governor’s Residence. The works of more than a dozen talented artists with developmental disabilities are on exhibit at the Governor’s Residence in Bexley through the month of May.
“Just as art is diverse and multifaceted, so too are those who create it,” said Mrs. Kasich. “The artists we recognize today have been gifted with a great ability through which they share their unique views and perspectives with us,” said Mrs. Kasich. “The pieces on exhibit at the Residence are beautiful, hope-filled, and inspiring.”
Mrs. Kasich was moved to create the “Spotlight” program as a way to help promote the wealth of artistic talent in Ohio. The program, developed in partnership with the Ohio Arts Council and launched in September 2013, highlights the works of one or more selected Ohio artists each quarter at the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden.
The winter 2017 Spotlight exhibit offers an eclectic collection of art from seven studios and organizations that work with Ohio artists who have intellectual or physical disabilities. The artworks range from thought-provoking abstract and traditional paintings to whimsical three-dimensional pieces.
“My husband and I appreciate the many art studios in our state that provide supportive environments for Ohioans with disabilities to creatively express themselves while gaining confidence in their skills and abilities,” said the First Lady.
